Skills workshop 3: versatile actor dancers- Pina Baucsh

In this workshop I explored the unique art forms in the work created by the key practitioner Pina Bausch.

One skill I explored was the use of expression. At one point I was blindfolded with my hands tied together whilst doing a phrases I created based on a key theme Pina used which was fear, I had to show expression in my body language and by the way I was moving. This made me think of different ways to show expression not just in my face, I feel I did this effectively by moving at different paces and different levels to show fear. This skill is taken from one of her dances 'café muller'. Another skill I explored was movement together. In this duo we put 4 counts of our phrases together to create our piece. We did this in unison. The little section before was us conveying emotion through our expressions I was showing care/love towards Honey and she was showing resentfulness towards me. We used another style of Pina where for example I was the object and Honey was moving my body parts and vicar versa.

In the lesson we watched 2 of Pina Bausch's pieces which were 'Rite of spring' and 'café muller'. We looked at the idea of fragmented movements which are short abrupt movements. We also looked repetition for example in the duo we repeated our count of 8 four times, this is to emphasise impact of the moves. Pina Bausch took peoples fears and confronted them in her work to show the raw emotion of the dancers. She did this because she wanted her dances to have a realistic feel as if you were watching a random person rather than you watching a story and waiting for the 'happy ending'.
