Compare and contrast Historical and contemporary ways art forms have been combined.
Compare and contrast the ways which two practitioners have combined different art forms ans styles of performance.
Style
DV8 use an eclectic range of styles throughout their work these include; pedestrian, contemporary, improvisation and verbatim. DV8's style is similar to Pina Bausch's as as they both use real life experiences, Pina Bausch uses the idea of fear and uses her dancers fears in her work whereas in DV8's work they use verbatim from interviews and puts it into their work.
Movement type
Pina Bausch uses a big ensemble of dancers and uses balletic movements. whereas DV8 use gestural movements to get their point across to the audience. They both use repetition of certain movements in their work to emphasises key themes and ideas.
Themes
DV8 create work by using taboo subjects and challenging the 'norm', their work covers; religion, sexuality, culture and dancers with restricted disabilities for example in 'cost of living the main dancer has a restricted disability. This is similar to Pina Bausch's work as she looks at relationships, gender, childhood and fear. For example in 'rite of spring' Pina uses people fears and work against them. These link together as they are both subjects that are either talked about or not talked about enough. In 'To be straight with you' the whole performance is based on taboo subjects and gives detail in their movements, use of props and dialogue.
Collaborations
Pina Bausch has work with classical practitioners for example she has worked with Paul Taylor and Paul Sanasardo and Donya Feuer. She has also worked with dancers from other companies for example she has worked with dancers from Martha Grahams company. This compares to DV8 as they work with armature who are able bodies and people with restricted disabilities.
Aural setting
DV8 use a combination of silence and popular music in their work. By using popular music I feel this makes the audience have a more enjoyable time and feel more included when watching their performances. I also feel the moments of silence in their work emphasises key themes within their work. On the other hand, Pina Bausch uses classical work from composers like Stanislavsky. They are both alike because in Pina's work her dancers use their voice and in DV8's work they also use their voice for sound scaping.
Devices
Both practitioners use a range of devices for example in their work they both use; unison, repetition, fragmentation/ episodic movements and individuals. However in DV8's work they use and gestures which is different to Pina Bausch's work and she doesn't use these devices.
Structure
Pina Bausch and DV8 have very similar structure as both of the use episodic work which is where they don't tell a story with their work, they just have little snippets throughout their work of different things which makes their piece a whole. They both use completely different topics in their work which make them so unique.
Physical setting
Both of their work is based on stage with a variety of different props. However DV8's also turn some of their work into film and record it rather then perform it. When their work is on stage, DV8 use projections which show facts and statistics of their piece which they are performing to affect the audience. Pina Bausch also affects the audience by using materials on stage.
I personally feel that Pina Bausch and DV8 are both alike but also have many differences in their work. They experiment in their work with many different topics and always keep the audience entertained.
Within your blog, you have worked hard on discussing the professional physical theatre company DV8 as well as the Professional Dance Theatre Practitioner Pina Bausch. Across your workshop blogs as well as your compare and contrast blog post, I can see that you have described a few of their works, you have identified and described their style and techniques – culminating into a discussion of how they compare and contrast. You have linked DV8 as a contemporary practitioner and Pina Bausch as a historical practitioner – although you have linked them to other combined art companies and practitioners. You have started to explain how their work is considered as combine arts, at times backing up your point with an example from their work. You have started to explain the effectiveness of their pieces and you have clearly compared and contrasted both of their styles and gave reasons of why they can be seen as similar or completely different.
